Description


The department offers courses leading to the degree of bachelor of arts with a major in mathematics. The bachelor’s degrees have specializations in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics/operations research, statistics, or general mathematics study. The bachelor of arts degree provides a traditional liberal arts experience through a balanced course of study in the arts, humanities, foreign language, social and natural sciences. Students planning to major in mathematics are encouraged to consult an advisor from the Mathematics and Statistics Department to design a program of study in mathematics or statistics.

II. Additional College Requirements (0-14 units)


Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language.

A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)


Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:

  1. complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
  2. demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
  3. show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
  4. participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.

The Mathematics and Statistics Department accepts any minor from any other UNR department.

1 Students who are preparing for secondary school teaching may substitute two of the three courses: MATH 373  , MATH 474  , MATH 475  for MATH 285  and MATH 311  .

2 MATH 485 - Graph Theory & Combinator , MATH 486 - Game Theory  , MATH 487 - Deterministic Operations Research  are offered on a three semester rotation; students can take whichever of the three courses is available in the given semester.

3 This elective may be any MATH/STAT course numbered 300-499.
