II. Brief Introduction

The MS program provides an opportunity for practicing K-8 teachers to focus on advanced study of pedagogy, curriculum development, and content in elementary and middle school settings. The focus is on teacher leadership. Emphases for the MS include math education, science education to STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education. Thesis and non-thesis options are available.

  • For students who are not licensed Nevada teachers, licensure courses may be taken as part of a master’s degree. Several areas of emphasis are available within each.
  • For students holding a teaching license, it is possible to earn credits toward an endorsement in ESL.
  • It is also possible, upon admission to a postbaccalaureate licensure program (in elementary, special or secondary education), to concurrently pursue a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. See the departments for more information.

III. Admission Requirements

Applicants need to meet and/or complete the following:

  • Completed application for program
  • Statement of educational philosophy and goals for the degree
  • Signed disposition sheet
  • Resumé
  • Two letters of recommendation (will accept the graduate school on-line recommendations). At least one recommendation must be from a supervisor who has directly observed the applicant’s work with children. The other recommendation may be from an employer who has directly supervised the applicant’s work experiences. Recommendations should provide detailed descriptions of professional qualities and potential for teaching.

The specific curriculum requirements are adapted to the professional needs of the student. Students should not enroll in any graduate-level course without first securing the approval of the department that such a course is acceptable toward a selected major or minor.

In addition to admission requirements specified by each department, applicants must be qualified in the professional judgment of the College of Education faculty.

IV. Program Requirements

The Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees focus on the application of theory in curriculum, teaching, and learning with an emphasis on research. A minimum of 36 credits, with 15 credits at the 700 level are required. A professional project, portfolio, professional paper and/or thesis will be required for completion of the degree. The specific area of emphasis determines the designation of either M.A. or M.S. In order to earn the master of arts, master of science or master of education degrees, students must complete 32 to 67 credits of approved courses with a major in education. Master of arts and master of science degree programs, in some areas, may also require a six-credit thesis.

A maximum of six graduate credits of S/U grades may be applied toward a master’s degree requiring at least 32 semester credits.

Generally, students are advised to enroll in improvement courses for in-service education at the graduate level. These courses are also offered in extension or branch centers, workshops, short conferences, evening schools and individual problem courses by arrangement. Inquiries are encouraged.
