II. Brief Introduction


The M.Ed. is designed for teachers in elementary education, secondary education, and special education who wish to improve and expand classroom skills to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population of students, focusing on learning, development, information technology and counseling. . The degree is also appropriate for any student wishing a master’s degree with an emphasis in educational psychology.The 37-39-credit degree includes courses in Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Information Technology in Education. Nine credits of electives also are included.

  • For students who are not licensed Nevada teachers, licensure courses may be taken as part of a master’s degree. Several areas of emphasis are available within each.
  • For students holding a teaching license, it is possible to earn credits toward an endorsement in ESL.
  • It is also possible, upon admission to a postbaccalaureate licensure program (in elementary, special or secondary education), to concurrently pursue a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. See the departments for more information.

III. Program Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes


  • Counseling students will have an understanding of essential counseling skills.
  • Students will understand and use theories of human growth and development for facilitating client problem solving and growth.
  • Students will be reflective in their understanding and practice of counseling.

IV. Admission Requirements


Applicants need to meet and/or complete the following:

  • Completion of the program application
  • GRE
  • GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Statement of career goals
  • 1-2 page resume
  • Two professional letters of recommendation
  • Qualified in the professional judgment of the program faculty

The specific curriculum requirements are adapted to the professional program and the needs of the student. Students should not enroll in any graduate-level course without first securing the approval of the department that such a course is acceptable toward a selected major or minor.

In addition to admission requirements specified by each department, applicants must be qualified in the professional judgment of the College of Education faculty.

V. Program Requirements


All degree candidates are required to complete core courses related to learning and educational psychology and an area of specialization in information technology in integration of technology in teaching and learning, instructional design, and online teaching. In addition, students take one educational research course, elective credits, and 1 to 3 credits of comprehensive examination. It is assumed that the typical student will have a background in education with an interest in exploring educational uses of information technology in the classroom. However, this is not a prerequisite for admission into the Information Technology in Education emphasis.

The 37-39-credit degree includes courses in Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Information Technology in Education. Nine credits of electives also are included.

Generally, students are advised to enroll in improvement courses for in-service education at the graduate level. These courses are also offered in extension or branch centers, workshops, short conferences, evening schools and individual problem courses by arrangement. Inquiries are encouraged.
