II. Description

The interdisciplinary minor in Cinema and Media Studies introduces students to a variety of approaches to analyzing film and related media through the study of directors, genres, film style, film theory, aesthetic theories, and relationships between media and society. While housed in the Department of English, this minor offers students the opportunity to take film- and media-related coursework in many other fields such as Art, History, Journalism, and Music.

III. Program Requirements (18 units)

Required Course (3 units)

Elective Courses (15 units)

  • Electives must be taken from at least 2 departments, including English.
  • At least 9 units must be completed in courses numbered 300-499.
  • Journalism majors may apply up to six credits of approved upper-division journalism credits to this minor.

The following courses are just examples; other courses, pre-approved by the minor advisor, may be used here. Because this is an interdisciplinary minor, it may be taken by majors in English, as well as other students.

NOTE: Students should also confer with their major advisor about limits upon “double dipping” courses across their major and minor.
