II. Brief Introduction


The Masters of Arts in Teaching History is designed for teachers in grades 5-12 who wish to enhance their knowledge base and career opportunities in social studies.

III. Program Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes


Students enhance their understanding of two fields of their selection for content depth, research and writing skills, and pedagogy.

IV. Admission Requirements


Students seeking the Master of Arts in Teaching History degree should read the Graduate School  section of this catalog and the department’s Graduate Bulletin. The department requires that applicants hold a bachelor’s degree with a major or a 24-units minor in history, education (history or social-studies emphasis), or a closely related discipline; and have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.75. (The GRE exam is not required.) Applicants must have at least one year’s teaching experience or its equivalent at the primary and/or secondary level before the semester in which they seek to enter the MAT program.

V. Program Requirements


The Masters of Arts in Teaching History degree requires 30 semester units of course work, including a teaching unit plan, and a final oral presentation. For further information, contact the department’s graduate advisor or see http://www.unr.edu/cla/history/graduate/index.html
