Environmental Science (Ecological Restoration and Conservation Specialization), B.S.


Students in the Ecological Conservation and Restoration specialization are interested in making positive contributions to land management by conserving or restoring diverse native ecosystems. With our location at the boundary of the Sierra Nevada and the Great Basin, the University of Nevada, Reno, is in close proximity to some of the largest restoration efforts in the Western Hemisphere. In addition to gaining a background in Environmental Science, students in this specialization take additional coursework in conservation biology, ecology, restoration, ecosystem management and GIS. Students who choose to complete an internship as part of their education have the option of applying to become a Certified Restoration Practitioner in Training (CERPIT), which is a global certification program sponsored by the Society for Ecological Restoration (more information here: https://www.ser.org/page/Certification).

Student Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • demonstrate critical thinking skills by assessing a problem, gathering and analyzing relevant information associated with that problem, and proposing possible solutions.
  • demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
  • demonstrate technical competency within their respective discipline.
