Microbiology and Immunology, B.S.

The department offers a series of courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology (MI). The major is a joint effort by the School of Medicine and the College of Science and trains students in the fundamentals of modern microbiology, with an emphasis on human and animal infectious diseases and immunology. Students are encouraged to become involved in laboratory research supervised by one of the faculty members who pursue a variety of medically related endeavors.

The MI curriculum will appeal to students who wish to pursue careers in microbiology research and clinical laboratory microbiology. In addition, the MI program is an excellent preparation for pre-health professional students seeking admission to professional programs in the health sciences and dental and medical schools.

The program of study will include the University Core Curriculum, general electives, and required preparatory courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will be required to complete seven core courses in microbiology and immunology, along with a capstone course in microbiology. Because of curricular overlaps, students cannot pursue dual majors in MI and Biology, or dual majors in MI and Neuroscience either concurrently or subsequently.
