As an official language of the United Nations, the European Union, the Organization of American States and the Union of South American Nations, Spanish offers many professional opportunities across the planet as well as in the U.S. With over 500 million native speakers and official status in 21 countries in the Americas, Africa and Europe, the Spanish-speaking population plays a vital role in the culture and economy of the world.
The Spanish Bachelor of Arts with concentration in Media aims to serve students who plan to enter a career using their Spanish language skills. It offers students who plan to enter the field of media with a foundational background in Spanish language, linguistics, and culture. It offers courses that focus on the linguistic structures of English and Spanish, including U.S. Spanish, and on the development of a bilingual and bicultural competence. Several courses offer students extensive practice in real-life settings that address the specialized needs of professionals – journalism – and prepare students for successful careers in which Spanish-English bilingualism is a key asset.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to write professionally in Spanish in ways that reflect linguistic or cultural analysis, critical thinking, and writing proficiency in the Advanced (or higher) range.
- Students will be able to converse in Spanish at the Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High (or higher) ranges.

Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language coursework. A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)
Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:
- complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
- demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
- show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
- participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.
B. College Breadth Requirement (6 units)
Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, 6 units that are outside the departments in which they minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill Silver Core Curriculum General Education requirements.
