BS/MD Direct-Entry Program


The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine’s (UNR Med) Bachelor’s of Science to Medical Degree (BS-MD) Program is a direct-entry, comprehensive, rigorous and supportive four-year, undergraduate program for highly motivated, mature, and academically exceptional students who are on the pathway to a career as a physician.

Upon acceptance to the BS-MD program, students will be granted conditional admission to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine upon completion all BS-MD and UNR Med graduation requirements. BS-MD students must maintain an overall and science GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the undergraduate portion of the program.

In addition to the curricular requirements, students accepted into the program are required to participate in co-curricular activities which take place during the summer. These experiences include coursework, research, clinical experience, community service, and MCAT prep.

Note: Students enrolled in this program may be eligible for Federal Financial Aid.


To complete a comprehensive review, this program will be on pause for the 2022-23 academic year.  UNR Med will not accept applications, nor will they matriculate a BS-MD class for the 2022-23 academic year.

To support incoming pre-med freshman for Fall 2022, the School of Medicine will host a Pre-Med Resource Event and Fair in the Spring of 2022 on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. High school students are encouraged to complete a brief Pre-Med Interest Form to receive an invitation to this and future pre-med events.

In addition, a digital Pre-Med Resource Guide developed by a current UNR Med medical student and University of Nevada, Reno alumnus is available to provide valuable information about UNR advising and programs, as well as online and national resources available to undergraduate pre-med students.

Admissions Requirements


To apply to the BS-MD program, applicants must be high school seniors who have attended a Nevada high school for at least two years and be on track to graduate this year.

Additionally, admission into the UNR Med BS-MD Program requires candidates to:

  • Obtain a combined Math/Critical Reading sections* minimum score of 1320 of the SAT, or combined math/critical reading ACT score of 28 or greater.
  • Place in the top 10% of their graduating high school class, or an un-weighted GPA of 3.65.
  • Provide evidence of a high level of maturity, professionalism, and independence.
  • Demonstrate significant exposure to health care and the practice of medicine resulting in a clear understanding about the rewards, roles, and challenges of being a physician. This may include experiences shadowing or observing physicians, and ideally, some paid or volunteer direct care or contact with patients. 
  • Demonstrate record of engagement in extracurricular experiences such as: community service, employment, leadership, athletics, music, art, student organizations, etc.
  • Be prepared to begin calculus and other college-level courses. 
  • Be first-time freshman applicants to UNR and who have applied to the university and been admitted by February 1st.
  • Meet one of the following criteria:
    • Be a Nevada resident and U.S. Citizen; or
    • Be a non-U.S. citizen who resides in Nevada and is DACA eligible; or
    • Be a permanent legal resident of the U.S. who resides in Nevada.

The BS-MD Application requires three (3) recommendation letters (specified below):

  1. One letter from an administrator or supervisor in a clinical or community service setting;
  2. One letter from a science instructor/teacher familiar with the student’s performance in an academic setting;
  3. One “other” letter of your choice such as another teacher, an employer, volunteer coordinator, etc.

Program Objectives

To meet the School of Medicine’s vision statement of A Healthy Nevada, the BS-MD Program is designed to identify bright, talented Nevada high school seniors interested in attending UNR Med and becoming a physician for the state. Our program supports these students in their preparation for, and matriculation into medical school with the goal of addressing disparities in education, healthcare and the healthcare profession within the state.

Graduates of the UNR Med BS-MD Undergraduate Program will:

  • Demonstrate mastery of subject knowledge needed in medical school coursework.
  • Develop personal and professional identity as a future medical student and physician.
  • Gain increased self-awareness and understanding of learning and study skill techniques to be prepared for the rigorous academic load of medical school.
  • Grow and evolve characteristics and attributes of a medical student.
  • Understand the necessary steps to take on their way to, and within, medical school.

I. Program Requirements


Students in the BS-MD program must complete all undergraduate requirements within their chosen major prior to matriculation into the medical school. To maintain their conditional admission to the medical school, prior to the completion of the undergraduate portion BS-MD students must:

  • Maintain a 3.5 overall and science GPA with no course grades lower than a C,
  • Achieve an MCAT score at or above the dictated raw score, adhering to the MCAT Policy (subject to change during program year by Admissions Executive Committee review), 
  • Successfully complete the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI),
  • Complete all curricular and co-curricular program requirements,
  • Maintain all program and professionalism standards.

A. Required Courses


Each BS-MD student will take a different set of courses in order to complete the undergraduate portion of the program, largely dependent on the student’s major. The recommended schedule is determined by the student’s undergraduate academic advisor. Below is a list of coursework all BS-MD students must take.
