The Ph.D. in Business Administration is the umbrella degree within the College of Business that will allow for the nurturing and training of the next generation of social scientists in the fields of Management, Marketing, Finance, Information Systems and Accounting. The fundamental core of this Ph.D. program is the development of experts who create and test theories that expand the knowledge base and can be translated into practical solutions for society.
The Ph.D. in Business with a concentration in Management will prepare the next generation of social scientists with foundational knowledge and skills in the areas of organizational behavior, strategic management, entrepreneurship, judgment and decision making, and international business. Students’ training in research methods and statistics will prepare them to create and test theory and conduct survey, experimental, and data base research. This training will create experts in organizational science who may choose careers in both academia and industry.
Two driving forces will shape the Ph.D. program in Management. First, the interconnectedness of the global economy requires experts who can work across cultural and discipline boundaries to find novel solutions to complex problems. The curriculum will be structured to facilitate and encourage such collaboration across disciplines at the University and beyond. Second, the discipline of Management is charged with training the leaders of tomorrow. The curriculum will be structured with an emphasis on developing innovative, visionary thinking concerning forms of organizations, processes, and management practices. The goal is to create a program that invites diversity of thought and openeness to ideas from all sources.
