The accelerated B.A./B.S./M.S. program encourages outstanding students in the Mathematics B.A. or B.S. program, the NevadaTeach Mathematics B.A. or B.S. program, or the Computer Science and Engineering B.S. program to obtain an M.S. degree in Statistics and Data Science in a shorter amount of time at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Admission Requirements

Qualified undergraduate students must:

Have completed at least 75 credits toward the bachelor’s degree with a 3.2 UNR GPA.
Submit an application for Accelerated Program before completing the bachelor’s degree.

Program Requirements

ACCELERATED B.A./B.S./M.S. PROCESS

Step 1 - Students must meet with the Undergraduate Advisor to discuss their interest in the program.
Step 2 - Students must meet with the Graduate advisor in Statistics and Data Science to discuss their interest in the program.
Step 3 - Students submits an Application for Accelerated Degree Program.
Note: Though students usually list two semesters of classes on the application, the Graduate School can give enrollment permissions only for the first semester classes. Students must contact the Graduate School prior to the opening of registration for the second semester to get enrollment permissions for the second semester classes. For example, if the student has Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 classes listed on the form, once approved, the Graduate School will give permissions to enroll for Fall 2023 classes. The student must contact the Graduate School (gradadmissions@unr.edu) in October 2023 to request enrollment permissions for the Spring 2024 graduate classes.
Step 4 - After the advisors determine that the student has met the criteria for participation, the form will go to the Graduate School for approval.
Step 5 - Once the approval is complete, the student will receive a copy of the application and an email confirming that they can enroll in the class.
Step 6 - The student enrolls in the approved classes.
Note: To make changes to their approved course list, students must resubmit the application form, which will require them to start over from Step 1.
Step 7 - During the senior year, students apply for admission to the master’s program through the Graduate School. Students must meet all of the admission requirements of the Graduate School and the Statistics and Data Science M.S. program.
Step 8 - Students complete all of the bachelor’s degree requirements and earn the bachelor’s degree. The accelerated degree program allows students to take up to 12 graduate credits acceptable for their bachelor’s degree.
Step 9 - Once admitted to the master’s degree program, students will complete all master’s degree requirements. Up to 12 graduate credits taken during their undergraduate career may be applied to their master’s degree, provided the student passes each of these courses with a “B” or better.

Financial Impact

Students admitted to the accelerated programs may use their approved 600- or 700-level classes towards their full-time undergraduate status. Students must, however, pay graduate credit tuition and the associated differential fees for the graduate-level courses. Not all scholarships can be used for graduate credit, but some financial support may be available through the graduate program. Students should consult with the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships regarding financial aid eligibility.
