Donor Management and Transplantation Science Graduate Certificate (Online)

The Donor Management and Transplantation Science Certificate Program (DMTS) aims to train healthcare professionals in leadership, management, and coordination of the activities related to the organ donation and transplantation process. This multitasking process requires a good understanding of healthcare services, appropriate communication, an ethical approach, and clinical care.
The DMTS Certificate Program aims to prepare the students to become “Organ Procurement and Transplant Coordinators (OPTC)” who facilitate organ donation from beginning to end. The OPTCs act as a liaison person between the donor’s family, the organ procurement organization, and ultimately the transplantation team.
The students who complete the certificate program will become eligible for a certification process driven by the relevant professional organizations that are valid nationally.

Program Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Describe the organ donation and transplantation system and federal regulations.
- Analyze and evaluate potential organ and tissue donors (through reviewing medical and social history, current medical condition, and infectious disease testing) to determine suitability for transplant.
- Evaluate the donor using evaluation process and criteria.
- Apply knowledge and skill to cultural norms, the healthcare system, grief, and loss.
- Demonstrate effective communication with donor families, organ procurement organizations, transplantation teams, and others.
- Apply ethical considerations in all stages of the organ donation and transplantation process.
- Demonstrate effective leadership in all stages of the donor management process, from the beginning to after donation.
General Information
The DMTS Certificate Program is consisting of four core courses and one internship of 240 hours (30 days) in three semesters.
The program is a cohort-based program with admissions every fall. Each semester is 14 weeks, and a full-time student can complete the program in 3 terms. There is a total of 15 Units to complete the program.
Internship opportunities will be provided in coordination with more than 50 organ procurement organizations (OPO) across the country.

Admission Requirements
This certificate program serves post-baccalaureate students who are working or will work in health sector. The target audience of the certificate program is nurses, PAs, MDs, DOs, public health professionals, and other healthcare professionals.
Students must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university to be accepted into the graduate certificate program.
Application is made directly to the Graduate School of the University of Nevada, Reno.
