Biochemistry is the study of the structure and function of the molecules in organisms such as animals, plants, bacteria, fungi and viruses, which gives its students a uniquely formative view of living things. Biochemistry’s exploration of the chemical processes within cells and the interactions between cells helps drive countless scientific advances in medicine, biotechnology and agriculture. As a minor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology may complement virtually any molecular science-based major. Biology, Microbiology, and Nutrition majors who learn more about organisms at the cellular level are well-equipped to build a deeper understanding of the science behind all life. Chemistry majors will develop an appreciation of how chemical processes drive metabolism, communication and replication of living cells. Additionally, the hands-on laboratory experiences that Biochemistry provides will nurture collaborative work and critical thinking for all science majors.
