English (Language and Linguistics), Minor

The minor in English Language and Linguistics complements many majors such as Anthropology, Speech Pathology, Philosophy, and World Languages and Literatures by offering courses in general linguistics, phonetics and phonology, syntax and morphology, sociolinguistics, language and gender, historical linguistics, and computational linguistics.

I. Program Requirements (18 units)


This minor is not open to students pursuing an English major with a Language and Linguistics specialization. Students majoring in other fields, including PackTeach English and other English specializations, may minor in English Language and Linguistics by completing the following requirements:

  • Minor GPA | 2.0
  • Minor Upper-Division Units | 9
  • Minor Residency Requirement | 6 Upper-Division Units in the minor at UNR
  • Unit Limits: No more than 3 units counted toward any major may be reused to meet the requirements of this minor.

Note: English majors pursuing this minor should regularly consult with an academic advisor to ensure ENG courses taken are optimally distributed between major and minor requirements on their advising report in MyNevada.

 Take one course from each of the following groups:

Group 1 - Phonetics and Phonology


Group 4 - History of the English Language


C. Minor Elective (3 units)


Select any one of the following courses not yet taken, or other suitable course with permission of the student’s advisor and the linguistics faculty, e.g. ANTH 480 , SPA 362 , FREN 312 , or SPAN 312 .
