Basque Studies, Minor

An undergraduate minor in Basque studies is offered through the Center for Basque Studies, part of the College of Liberal Arts. The Center offers many courses on Basque topics. The University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) offers Basque courses in the Spanish Basque Country. The minor program provides students with an introduction and exposure to one of the unique ethnic heritages of Europe and the American West.

I. Program Requirements (23 units)


Students majoring in another field may minor in Basque Studies by completing the following:

  • Minor GPA| 2. 0
  • Minor Upper-Division Units| 9
  • Minor Residency Requirement| 6 Upper-Division Units in the minor at UNR
  • Unit Limits: Per College of Liberal Arts policy, no more than 9 units counted toward any major may be reused to meet the requirements of this minor.

Complete 15 units from the following list. Second Year Basque (BASQ 203  & BASQ 204 ) is recommended.

Crosslisted courses may be taken under any of the prefixes noted above and still count toward fulfilling the minor. Courses listed through other departments (such as independent study) may also apply to the minor if the subject matter is approved by the program director of Basque Studies.

Students who include 

  and   to fulfill the minor requirement may also use these courses to fulfill their world language requirement.

II. Study Abroad Programs in the Basque Country


The University of Nevada, Reno is the lead institution of the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) whose central office is located on campus. USAC offers study abroad programs in more than 50 locations around the world. Students may participate in the USAC study abroad programs in the Basque Country in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain; Bilbao/Getxo, Spain; and/or Pau, France. Students can complete up to two years of world language requirements in one semester.
