Public Health Foundations, Graduate Certificate

The Public Foundations Graduate Certificate consists of 4 courses (12 credits) that provide foundational knowledge for working public health professionals who lack academic public health training or individuals interested in pursuing a career in public health. This graduate certificate is available to people who already have a bachelor’s or master’s degree and wish to add public health foundational competencies to their body of knowledge.

Students who wish to advance to the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in the School of Public Health may apply 12 certificate credits toward their MPH degree upon application and admission to the program. 

Note: Students who are enrolled in this certificate program solely are not eligible for Federal Financial Aid.

Program Learning Outcomes


The goal of this certificate program is to provide students with foundational public health knowledge to be effective public health professionals. Public health professionals work in a variety of organizations and agencies to contribute to the common aim of promoting and protecting health in human populations and their environments.

Program Learning Outcomes for the Public Foundations Graduate Certificate are as follows:

  1. Interpret results of data analysis for public health research, policy, or practice
  2. Discuss the means by which structural bias, social inequities, and racism undermine health and create challenges to achieving health equity at organizational, community, and systemic levels
  3. Assess population needs, assets, and capacities that affect communities’ health
  4. Apply awareness of cultural values and practices to the design, implementation, or critique of public health policies or programs
  5. Design a population-based policy, program, project, or intervention
  6. Discuss the policy-making process, including the roles of ethics and evidence
  7. Propose strategies to identify relevant communities and individuals and build coalitions and partnerships for influencing public health outcomes
  8. Advocate for political, social, or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations
  9. Evaluate policies for their impact on public health and health equity
  10. Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, both in writing and through oral presentation to a non-academic, non-peer audience with attention to factors such as literacy and health literacy
  11. Describe the importance of cultural humility in communicating public health content
  12. Apply a systems thinking tool to visually represent a public health issue in a format other than standard narrative

Admission Requirements


This certificate program serves post-baccalaureate students who are working in public health or post-baccalaureate students who wish to acquire foundational public knowledge. Students must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university to be accepted into the graduate certificate program.

Application is made directly to the Graduate School of the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Public Health Foundations Graduate Certificate addresses core public health knowledge and skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral health, and health policy.  This certificate program provides a foundation for public health practice and further public health education.
