In order to apply for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education program, students must have completed at least 30 credits of college coursework with a grade point average of no less than 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) and have completed EDU 202  or the equivalent with a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better. The 30 credits must include core requirements in English, math, and the sciences. In addition, applicants must have passed the Pre-Professional Skills Test (Praxis I) in reading, writing and mathematics with a satisfactory score, established by the Nevada State Department of Education.

A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)


The foreign language requirement may be fulfilled through any of the following options: Complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language (may be via correspondence) or American Sign Language. Show transcript evidence of successful completion of a fourth-year high school course in foreign language. Participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement. Demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Complete a 200-level course in speaking/reading in a foreign language plus a foreign culture class. Show evidence of being bilingual through native speaker status in a language other than English.

Students who want to be certified to teach must complete a full-time, one semester internship, and the PRAXIS II exams(s). NOTE: Foreign language majors and minors must have demonstrated oral and written proficiency in their language for admission to the internship.
