Federal and State Financial Aid


In order to be eligible to receive financial aid, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Demonstrate financial “need” (except for some loan programs) by filing a FAFSA application.
  2. Be admitted to the University in a degree or certificate program. You may submit your FAFSA prior to acceptance to the university, however, aid will not be offered until you have been admitted.
  3. Have a high school diploma.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  5. Have a valid Social Security Number.
  6. Be registered with Selective Service, if required.
  7. Be meeting satisfactory academic progress standards.*
  8. Use financial aid only for educational purposes.
  9. Not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on any federal educational loan.

The financial aid application (FAFSA) is free and information about submitting this application is readily available on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov or through our office at http://www.unr.edu/financial-aid. FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

To apply for federal financial aid, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov by March 1st for maximum consideration. Applying after that date, will only allow you to be considered for any remaining funds as of the date your application is received by our office. Need-based gift aid (grants and college work study) is awarded on a first come, first served basis to eligible students. If tax forms are not yet filed, students and parents are allowed to estimate on the tax information and submit the application in order to file early.

* “Satisfactory Academic Progress” is the term used to denote your successful completion of coursework toward a degree or certificate. The University is required to monitor the academic progress of all recipients of federal, state, and institutional aid. These academic standards apply for all periods of enrollment at all colleges attended. If you do not meet the minimum academic standards for grade point average and earned credits you may be ineligible for all types of federal, state, and institutional aid administered by our office.
