CASAT is a grant and contract funded center with a primary mission to improve prevention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals with addictive behaviors by helping organizations, students, states, and the existing workforce apply research-based practices.
The mission is achieved through university-based coursework; online courses and training; conferences and institutes; continuing education workshops; product development; web-based and electronic products and databases; and consultation and technical assistance. Specifically, an 18 unit undergraduate minor, a 21 unit undergraduate certificate, an18 unit graduate certificate and a graduate specialization within the master’s degree for human development and family studies have been developed to provide the addiction treatment workforce with the competence to deliver high quality services. In addition, CASAT provides opportunities to improve the knowledge and skills of the existing workforce and other helping professionals who see clients with substance abuse issues (e.g., physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and criminal justice professionals). In order to reach the broadest audience, CASAT provides training through traditional, as well as electronic methods, such as online and web-based products.
In addition to training, CASAT provides a variety of other services including logistical support for workshops and conferences, coordination of Nevada’s substance abuse resource center, compliance monitory of public-sector substance abuse treatment and mental health programs, curricula development for allied professional training, web support, and the management of a collegiate recovery community for students wishing to live a sober and healthy lifestyle. Additionally, CASAT’s prevention team provides assistance to community-based prevention programs regarding program development and outcome assessment.
Nevada’s Recovery and Prevention Community (N-RAP)
CASAT’s newest activity is housing a collegiate recover program entitled N-RAP (Nevada’s Recovery and Prevention Community). The mission of N-RAP is to provide an environment of nurturing support and peer connections for college students recovering form substance abuse and behavioral addictions and students choosing a substance-free lifestyle. With the overall goal of equipping sober students with the skills to be successful academically, socially, physically, and psychologically, N-RAP also coordinates and promotes substance-free activities for the college community at-large.
