The Institution in Brief


Established in 1864, the same year Nevada was admitted into the Union, the University of Nevada first offered classes in Elko in 1874 as one of the few colleges in the intermountain west. In 1885, the University was moved to more densely-populated Reno, where it has flourished since opening its doors in 1887.

The University is comprised of nine colleges and schools offering more than 145 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate school majors. Graduate-level training and research, including more than 33 doctoral-level programs, advance the university’s land-grant mission of learning, discovery and engagement for all students.

The university is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education as R2: Doctoral – Higher Research Activity with medical and/or veterinary medicine. This designation indicates that the university awards doctoral degrees in the humanities, the social sciences, and STEM (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines, as well as in medicine. The university also offers master’s and professional practice/other doctoral degrees in other health professions, business, education, engineering, public policy and social work.
