Regulations for Reduced Nonresident Tuition


On Jan. 26, 1988, the University of Nevada Board of Regents approved the following policy to be effective beginning with the 1988 fall semester:

Western Undergraduate Exchange (W.U.E.)*:

Students admitted as part of the Western Undergraduate Exchange program demonstrate the strongest academic qualifications. WUE students are not subject to out-of-state tuition charges and pay 150% of in-state registration fees. This is tuition savings of several thousand dollars each year. Students residing in one of the following states may be considered for WUE status: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming, as well as Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

For new freshmen:
Students must have a minimum weighted 3.25 high school Academic GPA in the following required core classes:

  • 4 years English;
  • 3 years math (Algebra I or higher);
  • 3 years of natural sciences;
  • 3 years of social sciences, and
  • must have a minimum 26 ACT composite score or 1,170 SAT (if taken prior to the March 2016 administration) or 1,240 SAT (if taken after the March 2016 administration) score combined critical reading and math only.

Test scores must be from the same administration/sitting. In order to be considered for WUE status, students must submit a completed application to the University by February 1st for fall. WUE eligible freshmen are those recent high school graduates who have completed no college-level work after the summer immediately following their high school graduation and admission to the University. WUE freshmen must live on campus in University housing for the first year. Other conditions may apply.
 
For new transfer students:
New transfer students may be eligible for WUE. Students must complete 24 transferable semester graded credits from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution within a WUE state and have a 3.25 cumulative transfer GPA (from all institutions). To be considered for WUE status, students must submit a completed application to the University by July 1st for fall and December 15th for spring.

Nevada Advantage 

Qualified first-time freshmen who are residents of WUE participating states but are not eligible for the University of Nevada, Reno’s WUE policy may qualify for the Nevada Advantage. States include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Island.

Freshman Award Criteria (Students must meet all eligibility requirements):
Students must have a minimum weighted 3.0 high school Academic GPA in the following required core classes:

  • 4 years English;
  • 3 years math (Algebra I or higher);
  • 3 years of natural sciences;
  • 3 years of social sciences, and
  • must have a minimum 22 ACT composite score or 1,110 SAT score combined critical reading and math only.

Test scores must be from the same administration/sitting. In order to be considered for NV Advantage status, students must submit a completed application no later then April 7th for fall. NV Advantage eligible freshmen are those recent high school graduates who have completed no college-level work after the summer immediately following their high school graduation and admission to the University. Freshmen awarded the Nevada Advantage are not required to live on campus their first year. Other conditions may apply.

For new transfer students:
New transfer students may be eligible for Nevada Advantage. Students must complete 24 transferable semester graded credits from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution within a participating state and have a 3.00 cumulative transfer GPA (from all institutions). To be considered for Nevada Advantage status, students must submit a completed application to the University by July 1st for fall and December 15th for spring.

For both WUE or Nevada Advantage students:
The WUE or Nevada Advantage programs are available to students in all majors, but is limited to 4 consecutive years for students receiving their first bachelor’s degree. WUE and Nevada Advantage requirements are subject to change. Students must meet the WUE or Nevada Advantage policy requirements and deadlines established for the semester in which they apply and must do so by the deadline, prior to attending the University.  Students are not eligible for reconsideration after they matriculate to the University.

Students cannot begin the process of establishing Nevada residency for tuition purposes while participating in and receiving the benefits of WUE or Nevada Advantage non-resident reduced tuition programs.

* Students who attend the University in the WUE reduced tuition program shall not be reclassified as a Nevada resident student unless the student has been subsequently enrolled as a non-WUE non-resident student for at least 12 months immediately prior to date of application for reclassification to resident student status.
