Veteran’s Satisfactory Academic Policy and VA Education Benefits Use

The term “Veteran” refers to any student eligible for and receiving VA Education Benefits or VA Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits. Evaluations are made at the end of each term to determine a student’s academic progress toward a specified degree or eligible certificate.

The Veterans SAP Policy is specific to students eligible for and receiving VA Education Benefits or VA Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits. Evaluations are made at the end of each term to determine a student’s academic progress toward a specified degree or eligible certificate. A student is considered in compliance with Veteran Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) if they earn a 2.0 semester and/or 2.0 cumulative University of Nevada GPA.

The first semester a student using VA Education or VA Rehabilitation Benefits fails to meet the prescribed SAP requirements, the student will be contacted for mandatory benefit advisement and placed on a written Warning of termination of benefits by the University of Nevada Veteran Services Office. Once advised, a student may use the VA Benefit during the Warning status and has one semester to comply with the minimum standard. If the student meets this provision, the Warning will be lifted and the student will be considered in good standing.

At the completion of the Warning term, if the student does not meet the SAP provision, but has increased his/her CUM GPA, they may appeal in writing for a second Warning term of termination of benefits to the Director of Veteran Services. The student will be required to attend a mandatory advisement meeting with the Veteran Services Office in order to have their appeal considered.

Students must meet the Veteran SAP standards or Warning term to be eligible for benefits. The University of Nevada Veteran Services Office is required to report all students on University Academic Probation or Dismissal to the Department of Veteran Affairs Education Benefit Regional Processing Office (RPO). Returning students admitted to the University below the SAP standard will also be subject to this policy and must seek consultation with the Veteran Services office to discuss possible Warning term eligibility.
