Historical and cultural background of music. A general course in music appreciation open to all students. Representative works are heard and analyzed.

Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to identify specific works of music through actively engaged listening.
2. Students will be able to name and discuss musical elements, instruments, forms, and genres.
3. Students will be able to discuss the ways in which music conveys meaning.
4. Students will be able to discuss and write about the function of music in culture.
5. Students will be able to speak and write about specific pieces of music descriptively and historically.
