THTR 401 - Costume Design (3 units) Art and theory of costume interpretation through play analysis, research in history of design and period style and rendering. (General Capstone course.) (Formerly THTR 440; implemented 2003.)
Prerequisite(s): CH 201 or CH 202 or CH 203 ; ENG 102 ; junior or senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 General Capstone Course Offered Every Spring - Odd Years Student Learning Outcomes (if available): Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to use understandings of various areas of theatrical exploration (design, performance, production, history, and critical analysis) to formulate designs for a variety of texts written in or written to represent various periods, classes, and groups of people. 2. Students will be able to develop and apply a production concept and utilize this concept as the creative backbone of a design project. 3. Students will be able to identify and query cultural, economic, and class distinctions, and will clearly, creatively, and ethically represent character, place/locale, time/period, style, mood, and theme. 4. Students will be able to synthesize fundamental design techniques with methods for clearly and concisely presenting design ideas, concepts, inspiration, and details. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the costume designer and her/his place within the process of theater production and within a larger historical context. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of composition and design through visual presentation and applied technique.
