CHS 211 - Technical Writing in the Health Sciences (3 units) Improve student skills in developing and presenting written discussion of a health science topic; gain experience with norms and guidelines for successful writing in the sciences.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered Every Fall and Spring Student Learning Outcomes (if available): Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to categorize and appraise the relevant health science literature that is the background for a research question. 2. Students will be able to synthesize health sciences literature in an appropriately written review that includes paraphrasing, comparison, and assessment. 3. Students will be able to describe the writing process and stages of successful writing. 4. Students will be able to apply the APA and AMA notation styles for citing sources and attributing credit. 5. Students will be able to create structured and unstructured abstracts that summarize a new paper. 6. Students will be able to practice expository writing in the health sciences. 7. Students will be able to produce a writing sample in at least one other category relevant to public health professionals (e.g., persuasive arguments, a press release, policy memo, lab report, or others according to instructor and student interests).
