ENG 709 - Poetry Writing Workshop (4 units)
Conducted as a writer’s workshop, specializing in poetry. Required for MFA students in English; elective for other English graduate students.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to graduate standing in the Department of English.

Student Learning Outcomes (if available):
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to analyze the traditional forms, line/enjambment, imagery and metaphor, meter, and rhyme and free verse using elements of poetic craft and technique.
2. Students will be able to analyze various debates concerning the contemporary poetry publishing landscape and articulate their own opinions.
3. Students will be able to analyze and describe their creative work within the context of historical trends/movements and genres in poetry.
4. Students will be able to constructively criticize poetry written by peers.
5. Students will be able to apply literary editing methods to compile and revise a portfolio of their own creative work.
