BIOL 100 - Biology: Principles and Applications

(3 units) CO4L
Basic biological concepts, interpretation and application of scientific methods, effects of biological advances on society. Core curriculum science course; cannot be used for credit toward field of concentration in biology.

Prerequisite(s): MATH 120 . Corequisite(s): MATH 126  or higher.

Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate scientific literacy in communication with others and in accessing current media, including an analysis of the difference between science and pseudoscience, and designing an experiment to test a hypothesis and be able to evaluate the results.
2. Students will be able to describe the cell theory—all life is composed of cells—and differentiate between various different type of cells, specifically prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
3. Students will be able to explain how the structure of DNA (1) allows cells to inherit phenotypic characteristics from parent cells and (2) allows cells to acquire genetic alterations that lead to potential evolutionary success.
4. Students will be able to relate how changes in DNA over time have led to the tremendous diversity of life on Earth.
5. Students will be able to describe how evolution of species is driven by the inheritance of genetic characteristics that give an organism an environmental advantage and identify the evidence for the ongoing evolution of species.
6. Students will be able to distinguish between the different levels of ecology and how organisms interact in each of those levels, as well as recognize the tremendous impact the human species has had on these ecological systems that evolved since the beginning of time on Earth.
