CHEM 797 - Thesis (1 to 6 units) Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to identify a novel research project in a specialized area of chemistry that will extend knowledge in the discipline of chemistry. 2. Students will be able to search and discuss the scientific literature related to a specialized research area. 3. Students will be able to explain chemical principles related to a specialized area of research and the broader scientific context. 4. Students will be able to carry out an advanced, independent research project on a chosen topic. 5. Students will be able to discuss research results in the context of the scientific literature. 6. Students will be able to communicate and defend the results of the Thesis research in writing and in oral presentation. 7. Students will be able to articulate and follow ethical principles in a scientific context, including professional standards of laboratory practice, the communication of literature research without plagiarism, the crediting of collaborators and standards for co-authorship, and principles of intellectual property.
