CHS 101 - Introduction to Community Health Sciences (3 units) Introduction to basic tenets of community health.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to define basic terms associated with public and community health (e.g., primary and secondary prevention, epidemic and endemic, communicable and chronic disease). 2. Students will be able to describe how the socio-ecological theory provides a framework for analyzing public health problems and solutions. 3. Students will be able to describe the historical context in which our current public health system evolved. 4. Students will be able to identify the organizations and agencies that oversee the different core areas of public health, including infectious disease, occupational health, environmental health, chronic disease, and injury. 5. Students will be able to describe the basic legal powers of public health agencies and officials. 6. Students will be able to summarize examples of how policy and legislation has influenced health behaviors and health outcomes. 7. Students will be able to describe real-world examples (both past and present) of public/community health problems and intervention strategies. 8. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to find articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and relate them to public health topics.
