CRJ 401 - International Perspectives On Policing

(3 units)
Survey of policing in developed and undeveloped countries worldwide, focusing on the evolving democratic practices, community policing and crime prevention, including civilian police peacekeeping efforts.

Prerequisite(s): CRJ 104  (or CRJ 101).

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to compare and contrast crime control and crime prevention strategies in developed and developing nations.
2. Students will be able to describe the structure and organization of policing and its ability to address complex cultural, ethnic, religious, economic, and human rights issues.
3. Students will be able to discuss democratic and human rights policing principles, describe the movement toward more democratic policing principles in implementing crime and prevention strategies, and examine the hurdles to this implementation in various countries around the world.
4. Students will be able to explain the role that the United Nations “International Police Forces” in peacekeeping and peacemaking worldwide.
