EDRL 673 - Methods for Adolescent and Adult English Learners (3 units) Overview of methods and materials for ESL instruction in secondary schools/adult language programs. Emphasis on application of national standards for second language instruction.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the role of academic language in content instruction. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the role of oral language development for ELs’ access to academic language. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the role of cultural diversity and inclusivity in ELs’ language development and academic achievement. 4. Students will be able to design instruction to engage ELs in the use of academic and oral language to access grade-level content while developing English proficiency. 5. Students will be able to apply English Language Development (ELD) standards in the instructional process for: explicit English development instruction; and inclusive content instructional practices. 6. Students will be able to apply Sheltered English Instruction and Content Based ESL principles to instructional design.
