EDSP 632 - Serving Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families (3 units) Facilitating the interrelationship of varied services for students with disabilities. Focus includes working with parents, professionals, and community services.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to describe principles of family systems theory in his/her own words, identifying transitions across life spans, providing examples of families’ unique responses to stresses, and describing stressors specific to families with members with disabilities. 2. Students will be able to discuss the role s/he may play in enabling and empowering families in planning for persons with disabilities by identifying community resources available to families, describing legislative requirements for family involvement in educational planning, and providing examples of strategies to encourage family engagement. 3. Students will be able to discuss how issues of ethnic and cultural backgrounds may impact family involvement in the educational system. 4. Students will be able to recognize personal biases and develop strategies to overcome those.
