EDSP 712 - Medical Aspects of Disabilities (3 units) Etiology, description, impact of conditions such as cerebral palsy; neural tube defects, seizure disorders, sensory impairments. Collaborating to meet educational needs related to medical issues.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Summer - Odd Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of medical issues related to disabilities as well as important educational, physical management, and health care needs related to areas such as abnormal development and effects of primitive reflexes and reactions, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, congenital brain anomalies, neural tube defects, curvatures of the spine, and their health conditions. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of issues and educational implications related to sensory impairments (i.e., hearing, vision, and combined deafblindness). 3. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of necessary terminology in reviewing reports from other personnel (e.g., OT, PT, speech/language therapist, nurse) and how to implement a collaborative teaming process; including knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act and how it pertains to implementing various procedures in educational settings.
