ENG 451A - American Literature I

Major figures and movements from the beginnings to the Civil War.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 303  or Junior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to write lucid, well-constructed arguments analyzing and interpreting texts.
2. Students will be able to analyze key early American texts in their cultural and historical contexts.
3. Students will be able to identify significant ideas, major authors and works, key historical or cultural events, and characteristic attitudes expressed in American literature before 1800.
4. Students will be able to identify the major movements within literature before 1800, and to describe the development of forms and genres across that period.
5. Students will be able to analyze American literature before 1800 drawing from theories in the field.
