FREN 111 - First Year French I

(4 units)
Introduction to the language through the development of language skills and through structural analysis. Includes an introduction to French culture.

Units of Lecture: 4
Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to converse in simple French about themselves, their family and their friends regarding likes, dislikes, physical appearance, favorite sports, activities, and food.
2. Students will be able to talk about the weather, tell time, express colors, describe where they live and what they do, location of places, parts of a house and their furnishings.
3. Students will be able to narrate in the present tense and the near future employing commonly-used regular and irregular verbs.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of simple conversations and recordings involving all of the above.
5. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of basic French in authentic print media.
6. Students will be able to write short paragraphs/compositions in simple French about the above topics.
7. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of and appreciation for cultural aspects of French-speaking communities and a sensitivity for some for the rules of courtesy and conduct of the Francophone world.
