HDFS 635 - Child Socialization: A Systems Perspective

(3 units)
Focus on understanding socialization of children from an ecological perspective with special emphasis on developing positive linkages between early childhood settings and families.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the socialization process and evaluate their own socialization experiences.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the mass media effects on children and analyze socialization messages sent by the mass media and the possible effects of these messages on children.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the importance of partnerships between families and schools, identify some of the barriers hindering the development of such partnerships and possible solutions and strategies; students will apply some of the identified strategies of involving families in schools by assessing parents and teachers’ needs and by developing, implementing, and evaluating a program in a school setting.
4. Students will be able to examine and synthesize existing resources and programs that are available for children and families with different needs in our community.
