JPN 111 - First Yr Japanese I (4 units) Introduction to the language through structural analysis and the writing system. Includes some conversation and an introduction to Japanese culture.
Units of Lecture: 4 Offered: Every Fall Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to recognize, read, and write hiragana and katakana, and about 40 kanji, use basic greetings, introduce themselves, describe where things are, make simple invitation, and describe daily routines in non-past and past tense. 2. Students will be able to communicate on some very familiar topics such as basic personal information ,daily routines, likes and dislikes, etc., using a variety of words and phrases. 3. Students will be able to orally present information about themselves and some other very familiar topics using a variety of words, phrases, and memorized expressions. 4. Students will be able to write on familiar topics related to everyday life using a series of simple sentences. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to listen and understand words, phrases, and simple sentences related to everyday life, and recognize the main topic of what is being said. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the main idea of short and simple written texts on topics such as self-introduction, location of things, daily routine, et cetera.
