PHYS 301 - Mathematical Methods for Physics (3 units) Applications of mathematics frequently used in physics, including vector calculus, tensors, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and complex analysis.
Prerequisite(s): MATH 283 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to set up and solve problems related to convergence of infinite series and or sequences. 2. Students will be able to set up and solve problems related to the expansion of function in an interval of conver-gence. 3. Students will be able to set up and solve problem involving linear systems of equations including eigenval-ue/eigenvector problems and the diagonalization of matrices. 4. Students will be able to use partial differentials to set up power series in two variables, solve max / min problems with constraints and differentiate integrals. 5. Students will be able to solve multiple integral problems such as surface and volume integrals; use the Jacobian to change the variables of integration. 6. Students will be able to set up and solve problems related to vector calculus and it’s to application to fields, gradient, divergence and curl.
