PSC 601L - Citizen Participation, Pressure Groups and Political Movements

Examination of nonviolent ways citizens directly and indirectly influence government beyond voting; interest group activity, protest behavior and direct involvement in government.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to compare the pluralist and anti-pluralist perspectives on interest groups.
2. Students will be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the different lobbying strategies used by interest groups.
3. Students will be able to discuss the political consequences of astroturfing.
4. Students will be able to articulate how interest group activity drives the differences we observe in policy outcomes nationally and across states and localities.
5. Students will be able to evaluate an original theoretical argument about interest group behavior using quantitative methods in the form of a research paper.
