SPA 301 - Introduction to Communication Disorders (3 units) CO10 Survey of the characteristics of communication disorders and the impact on individuals and their families. Discussion of cultural and linguistic diversity in communication skills.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to discuss multicultural influences on the normal communication process. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, etiology, characteristics, assessment, intervention, equity, and diversity in communication disorders. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles and stages of normal communication development across the lifespan. 4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology of speech, language and hearing mechanisms. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the professions of Speech Pathology and Audiology to include the educational requirements, licensure requirements and scope of practice.
