SW 630 - Social Work History and Social Welfare Policy (3 units)
Explores the historical development of the social work profession and current policies governing the social service delivery system within the United States.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to articulate the historical development of the social work profession.
2. Students will be able to identify the ideological positions and underlying values inherent to conservative, liberal, and radical political ideologies.
3. Students will be able to analyze the fit between ideological positions, policy solutions and social work values.
4. Students will be able to critically examine the differential effects of social welfare policies on diverse groups.
5. Students will be able to use electronic data sources to examine social problems.
6. Students will be able to articulate the central provisions of major social welfare policies and how these policies influence practice.
7. Students will be able to use written communication to effectively describe and explain social welfare programs and policies.
8. Students will be able to analyze the role of social policy in eradicating, establishing or maintaining inequality and oppression.
9. Students will be able to identify and describe pivotal polices shaping social services and the profession.
10. Students will be able to identify the steps involved in the legislative process.
11. Students will be able to distinguish between the roles all three branches of government play in policy.
12. Students will be able to analyze the effects of economic structures on social service needs and provisions.
13. Students will be able to analyze the effects of current trends and policy choices on social service provision and clients.
