Detailed study of one or more figures such as Hegel, Schopenhauer, Marx, Nietzsche, Mill, Green, or Bradley. May be repeated when course content differs.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to state a thesis about a key 19th-century philosophical text, explain the thesis, and provide evidence, textual and philosophical, in its defense.
2. Students will be able to explain and interpret some central ideas associated with one or more 19th-century philosophers.
3. Students will be able to distinguish better and worse reasoning, and recognize conceptual relationships, in a 19th-century philosophical text and/or a secondary source that comments critically on it.
4. Students will be able to show what is at stake, for current philosophical debates, in a 19th-century philosophical text.
