PAS 740 - Inpatient Internal Medicine/Hospitalist/Geriatric Clerkship

(5 units)
Second-year PA students will interact with multi-disciplinary teams to advance their knowledge and clinical skills to manage high-acuity, acutely ill, hospital-based medical and surgical patients.

Units of Internship/Practicum: 5
Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate professional interaction with patients and other healthcare professionals.
2. Students will be able to gather information, formulate differential diagnoses, and propose plans for the initial evaluation and management of patients with common inpatient Internal Medicine/Hospitalist/Geriatrics presentations.
3. Students will be able to develop evidence-based health promotion/disease prevention plans for patients of any age or gender.
4. Students will be able to describe the range of normal variation in the results of a complete blood count, blood smear, electrolyte panel, general chemistry panel, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, urinalysis, pulmonary function tests, and body fluid cell counts.
5. Demonstrate proficiency in presenting a new patient case in a focused manner, chronologically developing the present illness, summarizing the pertinent positive and negative findings, differential diagnosis and plans for further testing and treatment.
