SPA 668 - Assessment & Intervention of Language & Literacy Disorders

(3 units)
This course will focus on appraisal, diagnoses, and intervention of various language and literacy disorders in preschool through adolescence.

Prerequisite(s): Must be an admitted degree seeking student in the Speech Pathology and Audiology masters program.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the theoretical background and principles of assessment and treatment practices of language and literacy disorders in school age children.
2. Students will be able to explain the school-based policies and practices and its role in prevention, referral, appraisal, diagnosis and intervention.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the appraisal process of diagnostic and treatment evidence to inform Evidence Based Practice (EBP).
4. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the impact of culturally and linguistically different (CLD) background on language and literacy in a school based setting.
5. Students will be able to formulate intervention plan that address the four modalities of language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in the context of curricular demands.
6. Students will be able to assess different components (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) of language and its impact on literacy and related disorders.
