BIOL 604 - Population Genetics (3 units) Genetics of populations and mechanisms of evolution. Includes equilibrium conditions and forces altering gene frequencies and polygenic and quantitative inheritance.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. apply and interpret mathematical models in the study of population genetics. 2. demonstrate a basic understanding of the modern science of population genetics. 3. articulate in writing or verbally, the roles of both natural selection and drift in evolutionary change. 4. describe several ways in which new species can emerge. 5. describe the complex dynamics that lead to functionally coherent gene pools. 6. synthesize orally or in writing as assessed by a presentation and/or written report significance of current topic as presented in this course.
