BIOL 615 - Evolution (4 units) Pattern and process in the evolution of life on earth.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. integrate effective composition and communications skills, and critical analysis and use of information to explain and criticize papers published in the primary scientific literature. 2. describe scientific evidence of evolution based on the fossil record, molecular biology and comparative anatomy, physiology, and behavior. 3. explain the roles of mutation, genetic drift, gene flow and natural selection in bringing about evolutionary change within populations. 4. explain various mechanisms through which new species can arise. 5. construct and interpret phylogenies. 6. synthesize orally or in writing as assessed by a presentation and/or written report significance of current topic as presented in this course.
