CAS 355 - Individual and Group Addiction Treatment (3 units) Strategies and core competencies for treating addicted individual and group counseling. Experiential learning is the primary approach utilized in this class.
Prerequisite(s): CAS 254 ; acceptance into the minor or certificate program in Addiction Counseling and Prevention Services. Recommended Preparation: CAS 354 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate the ability to develop a therapeutic relationship through the appropriate use of empathic relating skills. 2. demonstrate motivational interviewing skills that accurately reflect the needs of clients based upon stage of change. 3. understand and utilize interventions appropriate for clients with addictive disorders. 4. articulate the impact that a counselor’s personal beliefs and values or “self” issues can have on the therapeutic relationship. 5. identify the stages of group growth and strategies useful to each stage. 6. demonstrate understanding of and ability to utilize group facilitation skills.
