EDRL 612A - Teaching Reading to Older Students

(3 units)
Emphasis on diagnostic teaching, instruction, special needs, and interrelated areas of reading, writing and spelling development. Intervention. Can be taken for up to 6 credits.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate critical evaluation of research on reading development and adolescent literacy.
2. demonstrate understanding of the interrelated areas of reading, writing, and spelling development.
3. identify the academic language demands typical of secondary-level texts, both in general and within particular content areas.
4. identify the specific reading and writing difficulties typical of readers with disabilities.
5. identify the specific reading and writing difficulties typical of English language learners.
6. identify contextual factors that may affect the reading development and the literacy habits of older readers from various socioeconomic and linguistic backgrounds.
7. demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of instructional strategies and programmatic interventions for supporting the literacy of struggling older readers.
8. demonstrate knowledge of effective practices with formative and summative assessment to diagnose and monitor achievement of older readers, as well as to make instructional modifications.
9. apply strategies to engage older readers and to encourage independent literacy habits.
