EDSC 321 - Secondary Education Pedagogy I (3 units) General methods of secondary instruction in the middle school, including practicum.
Prerequisite(s): EDU 202 ; admission to a secondary education program.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. reflect on one’s efficacy in the planning and teaching of lessons designed for middle school students by creating and implementing a lesson within ones content area which incorporates Vygotsky’s Theory on assisted learning and scaffolding. 2. describe and analyze the characteristics of middle school students by applying Erickson’s Theory to scenarios and reflect in a case study analysis. 3. assess individual student characteristics and adjust instruction appropriately by designing and implementing a lesson that incorporates Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. 4. describe means by which instruction at the middle school level can incorporate active rather than passive learning by explaining in a two page paper how teacher expectations influence active learning in the classroom. 5. evaluate and demonstrate a management/discipline plan that would be effective in a middle school classroom by analyzing sample management/discipline plans and creating a discipline plan for your future classroom.
