GEOL 705 - Inverse Problems for Earth Sciences (3 units) Strategies for inferring internal properties of earth with exact and uncertain data. Applications include current topics in seismology, gravity, magnetics, other fields of geophysics.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. understand and apply various methods to fit geophysical data with a model that requires determination of unknown parameters; they will distinguish among overdetermined, mixed-determined, and underdetermined problems. 2. demonstrate understanding of ways to deal with the null space in the process of obtaining a model that fits the data since most geophysical inverse problems are underdetermined. 3. read research papers that apply inverse theory, understand the methodology that is used, and be able to critically evaluate the results that are obtained.
